Word Processing for Free

Word processors are used to create documents such as letters, emails, and invoices etc. They usually have a word processor and some publishing additions.

Most businesses use Microsoft Word as their word processor. Word has become a defacto standard. Word is not free and is usually sold as part of a software suite called Office. Office is expensive, but it is possible to buy it at a moderate price as part of works suite. An alternative to Word is Open Office. Open Office is free and can be downloaded from the internet. It is a big download, so you need either a fast connection or a lot of patience and some do clever download software. Alternatively I can supply it on CD for the cost of the blank CD and burning it ($5).

Open Office will do most things Word will do. It will even read and write word documents, but does not write word compatible documents by default. It has to be told to write them.

Open Office also comes with a spreadsheet - the equivalent of excel.

Open Office is an open source application. This means that it has been developed by lots of developers, and the source code is freely available. The advantage of open source programs is that they are cheap, and are often aimed at exactly what the developers need. The disadvantage is that they are often a bit disjointed and may be a bit buggy. There is some very good open source software around, but there are also some very poor open source stuff too. Open Office is not too buggy, and it has the look and feel of office, but it is not exactly the same and users utilizing the high end features of office would probably find they could not do some things they could in MS office.

I can supply MS Office, Open Office or just about any other software you may need.
